The End of Summer Harvest

And we're finally blogging again!  Unfortunately I've been sick for the greater part of these past two weeks and haven't been able to do much of anything.  Today was the first time in a while that I've physically felt like myself again.  I was even able to get some mild gardening work done.  Though I'm seriously behind on many of my fall gardening projects, it feels nice to regain some semblance of normalcy. 

Now that summer is officially coming to an end, our weekly harvests will soon shift back to cool season greens.  Surprisingly, our tomato plants are still producing a fair amount of ripe fruit, but I expect that this will change very soon.  Within the next week or two, we'll strip the vines of all fruit, ripe or not and clear out the beds.  What's still green will hopefully ripen indoors. 

 We are still getting a couple of cucumbers and the odd zucchini each week.  The vines look so terrible that I'm surprised we're getting anything at all - yet another reminder of how resilient these plants can be. 

 I've been making and freezing a fair amount of tomato puree from our remaining paste tomatoes.  Instead of canning salsa this year, I'm freezing enough puree and jalapenos to whip up small fresh batches whenever necessary.

Our fall broccoli still has a ways to go before they will be ready for us to pick, but luckily for us, our spring broccoli is still going strong.  And now that the weather is cooling down, the plants are experiencing renewed vigor and producing loads of side shoots.

 This one particular side shoot was enormous.  Talk about a hardworking plant.

Finally, I'm starting to clear out all of the annuals from my flower beds in order to make room for more perennials.  Our zinnias have really been spectacular this year and I was sad to see them go.  However, I was glad to get one last bouquet from them before they made their way to the ever-growing compost heap.

  1. Sorry you were sick and hope you are feeling much better now. Very impressive tomato haul this week. I am not crazy about the vinegar that is required for the canned salsa and I have frozen a lot of my tomatoes to use in making fresh salsa too. Peeling is a snap, just rinse the frozen tomato under water and the skin comes right off. ~ Rachel @ Grow a Good Life

  3. Sorry about the illness, hope you're better. I still have tomatoes on the vine but none of them look as nice as yours. All of mine have cracks that are getting infected. Next year I think I will emphasize crack resistance when I choose varieties to plant.

  4. I'm so glad to hear that you are feeling better. Those tomatoes are just lovely. You are so lucky that your plants have been able to survive the bout of blight that has been going around. It definitely cut our harvest short by at 2-3 weeks. That broccoli "shoot" is amazing - I think we'll be lucky to get an actual head that size. And those gorgeous flowers would definitely cheer anyone up.

  5. I'm glad you are feeling better. My broccoli is just thinking about it. I'll get one head for sure, but I don't know if the others will do anything or not. I sure hope so.

  7. Two weeks is a long time to be sick, I hope it wan't too serious and that you are fully recovered soon. Those end of season tomatoes look incredible. Broccoli is amazing, my plants never really slowed down this summer and I have a hard time keeping up with them. I didn't even bother to start new plants for autumn.

  8. Our spring broccoli has really been hard working this year as well. I'm pretty sure for us it is because of the overall cooler summer we had. Your's looks great! We had to give up on our last week because of an aphid infestation.

  9. Gosh, it's nice to see what's growing three thousand miles away! Your tomatoes are glorious. And zinnias always make me smile. Folks don't grow them much in California. I wonder why that is?
